Just Let Go!

Holding onto the treadmill handlebars is always wrong regardless of your size, age, experience, weight or goals.  The only point in time you should grab the handlebars is for a momentary heart-rate check or for a brief turn to look behind yourself.  Any kind of holding on eliminates walking and running weight-bearing benefits.  Your legs are essentially getting a free ride, and the following problems are created when you hold the handlebars during your treadmill workout:

  • Ruins posture and body alignment
  • Reduces calories burned
  • Reduces effect of incline
  • Doesn’t build balance
  • Cheats the lower back muscles that help keep you erect while walking or jogging in daily life

So next time you’re on the treadmill, remember pump your arms instead of holding on the handlebars. Your body will thank you later!
